Faith between Iron and Fire

The P.G.R. Foundation presents the Faith between Iron and Fire exhibition. Testimonies of popular devotion on the occasion of the centenary of the First World War, with the aim of creating a museum itinerary focusing on five war scenarios of historical importance in Italy and which have also involved the majority of the world's population: the Italian Risorgimento, the World War I, the Spanish War, the Second World War and the Wars of Africa. A long journey that sees protagonists in the ex ~ vote soldiers survivors of gunfire and devout women who pray for the safety of their loved ones at the front, but also air crashes and naval battles.

The former vow shows the reality of suffering and violence typical of war, but also demonstrations of intimate hope. A hope that is inextricably linked to the profound sense of faith. The works on show flock to the walls of the four rooms of the gallery, accompanying the viewer not only through an historical journey, but also by rediscovering their identity. A collective identity that reveals itself as a testimony more than ever felt in the contemporary world. The monuments to the fallen with their presence inside the city underline the weight of the war and act as memory activators for posterity. The former vows in the show, in their own way, have the same purpose, telling at the same time scenarios of suffering, but with a happy ending.

So 99 testimonies of faith: many people depicted within the votive tables that, escaping to certain death, have entrusted their lives to the Madonna or to the patron saint. In the first room, in addition to the symbolic image of the exhibition that refers to the famous "Caporetto's Disfatta", there are works related to events of the First World War, in the following one will be exhibited evidence of the Spanish War and the Second World Conflict.

The third room is dedicated entirely to the Wars of Africa. In the last, the viewer will find in conclusion all the didactic path of the ex-voto phenomenon explained through testimonies dating back to the period of the Italian Risorgimento that will allow a complete understanding of the exhibition and its staging.
